What do I love about Le Crotoy? I love that it's so unlike anywhere else. It's beautiful, scruffy, full of history and always eccentric. It has the only south facing beach on the north coast of France too. There are lots of great late nineteenth century houses. Far more people visited before the First World War than do nowadays. The train came from Paris to nearby Noyelles sur Mer. It was one of the earliest routes out of Paris, and the tiny connecting railway still runs from there to Le Crotoy. The light in the bay is quite something. Toulouse Lautrec had a special love of the town. He came back, about three weeks before he died, when he was really ill and on his way home. A local fisherman, whom he had painted quite a few times, took him out into the middle of the bay in his boat. I can understand that.
These are some everyday photos which I took earlier this week.
